Idle Hands for piano, three hands, three performers, will be performed at the Staunton Music Festival on Saturday, August 19 at noon, at the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, VA. This unusual configuration of hands and performers came about in 2006 as a commission for the SMF's Piano Extravaganza concert, an audience favorite for years, featuring music for one piano, for one hand up to as many as ten. The choreography and contortions required to squeeze three, four or even five performers onto the same keyboard add an interesting, and sometimes funny, visual element to the performance. Symphony No. 2 will be premiered in San Diego, CA, by the SDSU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Gerdes, on October 15. This 25-minute, two movement work was commissioned by Michael for the orchestra. Subtitled "Vana," the Sanskrit word for forest, it is the first in a series of works inspired by Earth's endangered ecosystems. More about the piece, and a video, will be posted later.
